Cathedral bells will ring in fond memory of a special Chichester couple

Richard, a solicitor, died in 2011; Barbara, a law lecturer, in 2014. The arrangements have been put together by Mark Regan, a leading bell ringer from Worcester Cathedral. Mark, the partner of Richard and Barbara’s niece Anne Renshaw, wanted to do something special to commemorate their lives. The peal - the Mosse Delight Major - was created by Stan Jenner, who will also be ringing, with another six ringers from Worcester Cathedral, Westminster Abbey and St Paul’s Cathedral. Mark Regan, the ringing master at Worcester Cathedral, explained: “Bell ringing has its own lexicon: ‘Major’ means we’re ringing on eight bells; ‘Delight’ is a technical term about the mathematical construction of the ringing; ‘Mosse’ is the word which makes the method unique and gives the ‘peal’ a noun.” He added: “Although I only met Richard and Barbara towards the end of their lives, it was clear they were remarkable people. It is an honour to have known them.” Richard and Barbara’s daughters - Kate Mosse, Caroline Grainge and Beth Huxley, all of whom live in Chichester - are delighted. Novelist Kate said: “It is the most wonderful idea, exactly the sort of thing that our parents would hugely have appreciated - especially since the only other special peal of bells this month has been for Her Majesty the Queen! They loved Chichester, gave so much time to local organisations and societies. To know that the cathedral bells were being rung especially for them would give them great pleasure. We hope anyone in town that afternoon will stop for a moment and remember them.” The Mosse Delight Major will be rung from 1pm-5pm on Wednesday, September 30, followed by a private family celebration in Chichester.
