School celebrates students' sporting and enterprising excellence A Brighton school celebrated the sporting success and entrepreneurial excellence of its students at a prizegiving ceremony. The Brighton Aldridge Community Academy (BACA) held its first Sports and Entrepreneurship Awards at its Falmer campus. Dylan Davies, the headteacher, welcomed hundreds of pupils and parents who packed the main hall: 'For me tonight is the culmination of the year and celebrates all that is best in our academy.' Full article on Brighton and Hove News Literacy '˜heroes' honoured by national institute A school in Woodingdean has won a national award from a key national body for their work helping children who have struggled with their reading. Rudyard Kipling Primary School and Nursery was named top school in the '˜Exceptional Strategic Management of Literacy in a School' category at the annual Institute of Education "Reading Recovery" awards in London. Reading Recovery is a specialist programme that enables the lowest achieving children aged five or six to reach age-expected levels within 20 weeks. It involves one-to-one lessons for 30 minutes every day with a specially trained teacher. Brighton and Hove City Council announced yesterday they have completed their investigations into the Kings Road collapse on April 25 but they expect work along the road to continue until September 30. Full article on The Argus website Apprentice ambassadors, coming to a school near you Six Brighton and Hove City Council apprentices have come together to raise awareness of apprenticeships in the city. The new apprentice ambassadors are all apprentices at Brighton and Hove City Council and were brought together by the Council's Education and Inclusion department. The aim is to promote the importance and availability of Apprenticeships to young people and parents/carers across the city, giving them the chance to find out about other career options. Full article on the Brighton and Hove City Council website Lottery funding to help University of Brighton sports department The University of Brighton has received National Lottery funding allowing it to provide more sports to students across all campuses. Students at the University of Brighton will benefit from Â£163,555 of funding thanks to National Lottery funding from Sport England's University Sport Activation Fund. The Brighton University is one of 54 to receive nearly Â£10m of funding to help get nearly 180,000 new students playing sport. This significant award recognises 21 museums across the country that demonstrate excellence and ambition. Over the next three years the Arts Council's investment of over Â£2 million will enable the Royal Pavilion and Museums to provide a great cultural experience for more people than ever. Highlights include exciting new exhibitions and arts programmes. There will also be extensive new volunteering and skills development opportunities; more collections online; and bold and imaginative use of the museum's treasures to inspire learning and creativity among local community groups, children and young people. Full article on the Brighton and Hove City Council website First service for men experiencing domestic violence or abuse Brighton and Hove's first care pathway for men experiencing domestic violence or abuse has been unveiled. Until now, heterosexual men had to access national helplines. But the new pathway means they can get help and support directly via Victim Support, an independent charity for victims and witnesses of crime. RISE, Brighton and Hove's local domestic abuse charity, will continue to offer help and support for gay, bisexual and trans men. Free specialist advice and information, available to women and men, is also available every Wednesday between 9am and noon at a Domestic Abuse Surgery at Hove Town Hall. A group of about 40 vehicles was ordered to leave Withdean Park after a legal notice - known as a section 61 notice - was served on the unauthorised encampment. Some of the group were moved off Patcham Peace Gardens, off London Road, Brighton;Â about 30 trailers were camped on Waterhall playing fields in Waterhall Road. Full article on The Latest website Bomb disposal called out after gun haul and grenade found A bomb disposal unit were called to a house in Brighton after Sussex Police officers found a cache of weapons including a hand grenade. The force said: 'Police officers got slightly more than they bargained for when they went to a house in Brighton to secure a few firearms. They discovered a haul of 30 rifles and 40 handguns at the home in Larkfield Way. 'The rifles had been decommissioned but many of the handguns were live and loaded. A World War Two hand grenade was also found in the house and the bomb disposal unit were called to make it safe.' Full article on Brighton and Hove News City College to host recruitment day for apprentices City College Brighton and Hove is to host a recruitment day for people who want to become apprentices. The event is taking place on tomorrow (Friday, July 4) in conjunction with Mears, the housing and maintenance contractor, which has a base in Moulsecoomb. Mears is in the fifth year of Â£200 million 10-year contract with Brighton and Hove City Council during which the company committed to taking on 200 apprentices. City College said that the recruitment event was aimed at young people interested in apprenticeships in the construction and maintenance trade sectors. In Brighton and Hove it could be worth Â£127 million to the local economy. The city's third sector has an estimated income of about Â£73 million a year, employs 6,900 people and contributes about Â£127 million to the local economy. But a new report by Brighton and Hove Community Works says: 'Many of the useful outcomes of the sector can't easily be translated into financial figures.' Full article on Brighton and Hove News Two Brighton and Hove women ordained Two women from Brighton and Hovewere ordained as ministers in the Church of England. Alice Whalley and Kate Lawson were among 17 people who became deacons in a ceremony at Chichester Cathedral. Alice Whalley, 26, will serve as a curate at St Andrew's Church in Moulsecoomb; Kate Lawson will serve as a curate at All Saints in Hove. She has been worshipping at St George's Church in Brighton for the past ten years and her husband John sings in the choir. Full article on Brighton and Hove News Minister praises Brighton and Hove's green energy drive A government minister praised people and businesses in Brighton and Hove for turning green energy from something for ideological enthusiasts to a mainstream choice. Gregory Barker, the clmate change minister, spoke during a visit to Shoreham Harbour where he climbed on to the roof of Shed 10 to see the recently installed array of solar panels. The 880 photovoltaic (PV) panels were put up by the Brighton Energy Co-operative, which has started installing more panels on the roof of nearby Shed 3a for the port. Full article on Brighton and Hove News 'Sensible on Strength' scheme helps street-drinkers into treatment Street-drinkers are now more likely to successfully engage with treatment for their alcohol addiction following the introduction of a voluntary scheme that is encouraging off-licences not to sell high-strength alcohol. In the first few months of Brighton and Hove's "Sensible on Strength" campaign, 82% of the city's highest-profile street-drinkers have switched to lower-strength alcohol and are more able to engage with agencies. According to Equinox, the substance misuse and mental health charity, there has been a marked improvement in the lives of the people they are supporting. Jesse Wilde, service manager at Equinox, Brighton, said: 'It is now the exception rather than the rule for our outreach workers to see street-drinkers with high-strength cans, which is a complete reversal of the situation 12 months ago." Full article on the Brighton and Hove City Council website New carers wanted for council's Shared Lives scheme for vulnerable adults In 1983, Marian Ferguson and her husband decided to become foster carers for Brian, a young boy with Down's Syndrome. Wind the clock forward 31 years to the present day - and Brian is still happily living with Marian. It is a success story that has come about through Brighton and Hove City Council's "Shared Lives" scheme. Shared Lives links up vulnerable adults with carers who provide support and accommodation in their own home. It's like fostering, but for adults who need extra support rather than children. The Shared Lives team is looking for more carers. It can be either on a full-time, short-breaks or sessional basis. The Small Business Outlook report from the Centre for Cities said it was the UK's third-best performing city for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) that pursued 'high-growth strategies' last year. Full article on The Argus website New seafront toilets open While many local authorities are having to close public toilets following the latest round of budget cuts, Brighton and Hove City Council is bucking the trend. The council has officially opened a newly-refurbished seafront toilet block at West Pier Arches. The extra facilities, at an extremely busy part of the seafront, will be fully attended throughout the summer and will be part funded through charging for use. Full article on the Brighton and Hove City Council website Museum seeks toy stories Brighton's Toy and Model Museum has announced one of the ventures that will form part of its 25th Anniversary celebration in 2016. The 'Toys in the Community' oral history project is being funded by a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund, and will be centred on 25 interviews with people of all ages in the city about their childhood memories of toys they played with. The museum '“ based in Trafalgar Street underneath Brighton Station '“ is looking for contributors to take part in the initiative, and is holding a drop in event on Wednesday July 9th from 5:30pm to 7:30pm.
