THE controversial playcentre debate came to a tragic end last week after council bosses voted to scrap the service.

Councillors voted 20:9 in favour of axing Northgate and Ifield playcentres for good and introducing a new 'Venture' system – designed to boost the quality of play facilities across the town.

Tempers flared at a specially convened council meeting on Tuesday night as councillors split down party lines to vote on the future of Crawley's vital playcentres.

Ten-year-old Samuel Wiltshire accused town hall bean counters of 'tearing down his heart' by shutting his beloved playcentre.

The youngster attends the Northgate centre almost every day to meet his mates.

Samuel said:"I have found it very disappointing, I come here almost everyday, my brothers have been here and a lot of people from home come here.

"They are tearing down my heart I'm not going to have anywhere to meet my mates after school now."

And so those most in need lose out again. Not all parents can afford anything other than the play centre. Not all parents can drive their kids to other clubs. The new play scheme will be good for the haves while the have-nots can go hang - as usual. Outrageous decision.
