It was approximately an hour until he was able to crawl to the telephone to raise the alarm, which was shortly after 6am on Saturday.

When emergency services arrived at the scene, he was found to have suffered serious head injuries and was taken to St. George's Hospital in Tooting by ambulance.

He remains in hospital and is described as being in a serious but stable condition.

The victim's car was stolen and subsequently found a little over a mile away from his home, abandoned in Newlands Park off Turners Hill Road, near the B2028 / A264 roundabout, north of Copthorne.

Cops have described the suspects as: A black male and a white male who spoke with a southern accent.

They are aged in their mid 20s, of a slim build and approximately 5' 11" tall.

DI Jo Banks said: "This is a very unusual crime to happen in the Mid Sussex area and we are working hard to identify the suspects.

"The victim was very brave and endured an appalling attack by cold and callous thieves. Despite being left in a life threatening condition, the victim was able to call for help.

"The offenders appear to have targeted a secluded property in a rural location.

"I would urge members of these communities to be extra vigilant, and if they see anyone acting suspiciously or anything unusual in their area, they should contact us immediately.

"Forensic and search trained officers have conducted a thorough search of the immediate area further enquiries are taking place.

"Anyone with information is asked to contact the Major Crime Branch on 0845 60 70 999 quoting Operation Barton, or call Crimestoppers (registered charity) anonymously on 0800 555 111 - you may be eligible for a reward."
